A new street lighting system is being installed on Walnut Street in Shadyside, Pittsburgh officials said.
The project will consist of 30 new decorative light poles with LED acorn light fixtures replacing the existing lighting and utility poles.
Work on the project began on Wednesday and is scheduled to be completed in May.
The new lighting system is designed to eliminate some of the overhead wiring visible along Walnut Street, as the new lights will be powered by underground conduit. Workers will trench the roadway along the curb and run conduit through the pole bases in the sidewalk.
During the project, work will be phased to limit the disturbance to parking and business deliveries. Businesses will be able to remain open throughout the project.
The project is divided into five phases, during which different segments of the road will be closed. These phases are:
- South Aiken to Copeland from March 24 through March 30
- Copeland to Bellefonte from March 31 through April 6
- Bellefonte to Filbert from April 7 through April 13
- Filbert to Ivy from April 14 through April 20
- Ivy to South Negley from April 21 through April 28
Detour signs will direct drivers to Ellsworth Avenue for both directions of travel. Advanced “Road Closed” signs will be posted to warn drivers on side streets of upcoming closures at intersections.
Sidewalks will remain open.
