Two people were killed and another person was critically hurt in a head-on crash involving a wrong way driver Saturday morning on Route 28 near Pittsburgh’s North Side.
The southbound lanes fully reopened around 12:30 p.m., after having been closed for more than five hours between the 31st Street Bridge and East Ohio Street while authorities investigated and removed the wreckage.
The crash was reported just after 7:15 a.m.
According to police, first responders arrived to find one of the vehicles in flames. The man driving that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman who was a passenger in the second vehicle was also pronounced dead; the man driving that vehicle was taken to a hospital in critical condition, said Cara Cruz, Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman.
She said one of the vehicles was headed in the wrong direction, against traffic.
“We don’t know which of the two vehicles was going in the wrong direction,” she said.
Pittsburgh police are investigating.
In addition to the southbound closure, northbound traffic was restricted between the 40th Street Bridge and the East Ohio Street exit.
