A Michigan company has moved one step closer to opening a medical marijuana testing laboratory in Trafford after borough officials approved the firm’s request to operate out of a building used by the town’s ambulance service.

The Trafford Zoning Board this week granted Lansing-based ACT Laboratories Inc. a variance to operate the lab at 109 Brinton Ave., in a building owned by Trafford Emergency Medical Services Company No. 1. The variance was needed because a laboratory is not a permitted use in that residential section of Brinton Avenue, said Adam Hlad, borough code enforcement officer.

The company intends to use Trafford’s ambulance service’s 3,500-square-foot building. There would be only a few employees, and the lab will not be open for people to have medical marijuana tested.

ACT notified the state it intends to close its Clearfield lab and move to Trafford. The company has medical marijuana testing facilities in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. ACT has one of four medical marijuana testing labs in the state. Two are in Harrisburg and the other is in Allentown.

David Isenga, scientific director for ACT, could not be reached for comment.

The state Department of Health notified ACT that after reviewing its application to move its medical marijuana lab testing facility from Clearfield, it can proceed with constructing its facility in Trafford. ACT needs accreditation for its new location, and it must be inspected before testing can begin, the health department said.
