Kennywood’s highly anticipated Steel Curtain roller coaster will open to riders July 13, the park said Friday.

The West Mifflin park took the 4,000-foot ride for test spins this week, which had many coaster enthusiasts salivating on social media. The two-minute journey features nine inversions and tops out at 75 mph.

The new ride boasts having the world’s tallest inversion at 197 feet high. It is the state’s tallest roller coaster, standing at 220 feet with a 205-foot drop coming out of the record-setting inversion. It stretches over Kennywood’s Lagoon and crosses over other park midways.

“The Steel Curtain isn’t like any other roller coaster out there, and we can’t wait to start taking guests the world over for the ride of their lives,” said Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas in a news release Friday.

The Steel Curtain, created in partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was designed by S&S Worldwide.

“The Steelers organization is very excited to see The Steel Curtain roller coaster come to life,” said Steelers Vice President of Sales & Marketing Ryan Huzjak. “We’ve been following the construction process closely, and we’re hopeful it will live up to its namesake.”

The park plans to open Steelers Country at Kennywood, a themed section within the park, later this year.
