The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to stay true to their word and provide competition for kicker Chris Boswell in training camp this summer.
It just won’t involve Matt McCrane.
McCrane, who converted all three of his field-goal attempts in the Steelers’ season-finale against Cincinnati, was one of two players waived by the team Thursday afternoon. Also cut was cornerback Jack Tocho, a product of the defunct Alliance of American Football.
When the Steelers signed Matthew Wright as an undrafted free agent after the NFL Draft, it gave them three kickers on the 91-man offseason roster. With McCrane gone, Wright will provide the only competition for Boswell, who made 13 of 20 field-goal attempts last year for a career-worst 65 percent conversion rate.
Signed to a contract in the final week of the season after Boswell went on injured reserve with a groin injury, McCrane kicked field goals of 39, 47 and 35 yards in the Steelers’ 16-13 win against the Bengals on Dec. 30.
Tocho was a seventh-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2017. He played for the Birmingham Iron of the AAF this winter but was signed by the Steelers three days after the upstart league ceased operations.
