A $20,000 donation from the Pirates’ charitable foundation is helping Pittsburgh improve two city baseball fields.
Pirates Charities is providing $10,000 for each field through its Fields for Kids program.
The donation will pay for infield resurfacing and new dugouts at Dinan Field in Stanton Heights and Devlin Field in Arlington. The former is also known as Officer Eric Kelly Memorial Field, in honor of a city police officer killed while on duty in Stanton Heights 10 years ago.
“I want to thank the Pirates for these kind donations, which will not only improve athletic opportunities for youth, but further honor the life and service of Officer Kelly,” Mayor Bill Peduto said in a statement.
Work is expected to begin by month’s end. The Mayor’s Office will submit a resolution to City Council on Tuesday calling for acceptance of the money.
Fields for Kids provides grants to improve youth baseball and softball facilities. Since it began in 2009, the program has distributed more than 330 grants in the Pittsburgh region.
