Police are investigating what caused a motorist to cross two lanes of traffic, strike a pole and crash into a building Sunday afternoon in Shaler.

Shaler police Lt. Sean Frank said the crash happened around 3 p.m. when the driver crashed into the Barrel Junction restaurant, 3108 William Flynn Highway.

Frank said it’s unclear what may have caused the crash.

He said the driver, a man in his 40s, didn’t immediately appear to be impaired. The driver and a passenger were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

No one in the restaurant was injured, but it will remain closed while repairs are made to the front of the building.

Frank said it’s lucky the driver didn’t hit any other cars or people in the crash.

“It could have been a disaster,” he said.
