The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is giving Pittsburgh a $350,000 grant to purchase recycling bins for city residents.
Pittsburgh will use the money to buy 13,000 residential curbside recycling containers and pay for a recycling education program consisting of leaflets, website updates and a social media campaign, according to Mayor Bill Peduto’s office.
DEP will buy stickers for the container lids, detailing what material is permissible for recycling.
The city will distribute the bins to residents over the next two years.
Tim McNulty, a Peduto spokesman, said officials would work out details such as who is eligible for bins and how they will be distributed after the grant is approved by City Council. Council on Tuesday introduced an authorization bill and will vote in coming weeks.
In a separate program, the Pennsylvania Resource Council has distributed 5,200, 32-gallon bins, mainly to North Side residents.
City residents can buy their own bins or be asked to be placed on a Pennsylvania Resource Council waiting list by calling 412-488-7490 or visiting its website.
